Spring Preview: Defensive Backfield

Anytime you lose a couple of players at one position who have started for four years, you face an adjustment period. That is exactly what the Hawkeyes face this coming year as Jovon Johnson and Antwan Allen have exhausted their eligibility. But, Iowa still has plenty of experience with the likes of Marcus Paschal and Miguel Merrick at safety to more than compensate for their departure.

Say what you will over the years about Jovon Johnson and Antwan Allen, the duo improved every year on the field and both will likely get a shot somewhere in the NFL later this month at cornerback.

Shada had shown solid cover skills that improved greatly from one year to the next. On the other hand, Godfrey has no real extensive game experience at corner. One thing we do know about Godfrey is that he could be one of the best athletes on the team and that will go a long way when you are playing a position that is really all about reading and reacting.

One thing that both players bring to the table from a physical sense is size, which has obviously been lacking against the ever growing number of gigantic receivers in the Big Ten.
