Spring Grades: DBs

SoonerScoop.com will close out the spring by taking a look at each of the positions on the Sooner football team over the next two weeks. As the Sooners headed into spring practices, Bobby Jack Wright made a major decision. He wanted to give his starting strong safety a shot as a cornerback during the spring. It was going to be a test run for Reggie Smith.

The OU coaching staff didn't think he would fail at corner. In fact, they thought he would excel at the position. But after just a few spring workouts, it quickly become clear, Smith was too valuable as a cornerback to continue playing strong safety for the Sooners.

Smith's switch changed things up at the safety position. Darien Williams and Jason Carter became the two players taking most of the snaps at the starting safety spots. Nic Harris and Keenan Clayton worked with the No. 2 unit most of the way and high school newcomer Quinton Carter took on an observer's role early.

OVERALL GRADE: C

Darien Williams and Jason Carter are both capable players in the Oklahoma defense. Are they difference makers? That becomes the question which will have to be answered next fall. During the spring, both players seemed to put on solid performances. But both were overshadowed at times by youngsters like Nic Harris and Keenan Clayton.

There is little doubt Harris and Clayton have more talent and potential than Williams and Carter. Harrises two interceptions during the Red & White finale showed his amazing potential.
