Class of 2007: Pantherlair's PA Top 50
Last year approximately 80 high school football players from the state of Pennsylvania signed Letters of Intent with Division 1A football programs. It is still early in the recruiting process but the last we look almost 50 prospects already had offers from Division 1A colleges which has the Class of 2007 about at the same pace as the Class of 2006.
The Class of 2007 is deep with offensive linemen with 15 already having offers. There were a number of offensive linemen left off the first publication of the Pantherlair PA Top 50 that might still make it before we start the football season this fall. Four offensive linemen have already made decisions and have made verbal commitments.
The Class of 2007 is also deep in wide receivers with eight wideouts already holding scholarship offers from Division 1A schools. Nick Sukay[db] from Greensburg Central Catholic, [db]Maurice Williams from Erie Strong Vincent, Toney Clemons from Valley, Jon Ditto from Gateway and Derek Moye from Rochester all have offers from Dave Wannstedt's staff. Nick Sukay has been a mild surprise this spring.
Offensive tackle Dan Matha, offensive guard Gino Gradkowski, wideout Jon Ditto all helped themselves with strong workouts at the Nike Camp at State College.
Pitt has verbal commitment from quarterback Pat Bostick who is the top-ranked quarterback prospect in the state and arguably the top-ranked prospect regardless of position. Bostick chose Pitt over offers from Tennessee, Georgia, NC State, Maryland, Louisville and Iowa. Last year seven Pa. quarterbacks signed with Division 1A programs. This years group is not as heralded but it would not surprise us if a half dozen signed Letters of Intent this year.
Maurice Williams plays quarterback for Erie Strong Vincent but he worked out often as a wide receiver at the combines and has convinced college recruiters he will make the transition.
Tight end Andrew Devlin got a late start in the recruiting process because he was busy leading Mount Lebanon to a WPIAL AAA basketball championship. Devlin has made up lost ground and has offers from Pitt, West Virginia, Boston College, Iowa, Maryland, Northwestern and Virginia.
Only eight players prospects on the Pa. Top 50 have committed so far so there is still time for college recruiters to make their pitch for many of the best in the state.
Many of the prospects from the Class of 2007 have attended a number of combines in the Evaluation Period including the Nike Camps at State College and Columbus, the adidas camp at the UPMC complex, the Metro Index Camp at the UPMC complex and the Elite College Combine Camp at Randolph, New Jersey. The next stop for many of the prospects will be to attend summer camps during the month of June on college campuses. In addition many will attend 7-on-7 passing camps. This will give reporters and coaches another chance to evaluate many of the prospects that do not yet have offers.
The Pantherlair will update the Top 50 again later this summer.
