Defensive tackle target list expands
Notre Dame won't discriminate in recruiting defensive tackles.
While head coach Charlie Weis would love to load up on prospects in the mold of Joseph Barksdale and Marvin Austin, two ready-made linemen that will compete for playing time from the day they step on campus, the Irish won't limit their search to prospects adorned in star rankings.
Recently Notre Dame offered a scholarship to Michael Reardon, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound athlete, in the hope he can help the Irish at defensive tackle. Of course, Reardon doesn't play defensive tackle and most other programs project him at strong side end, but Weis saw something in the Villa Park, Calif., standout when he visited the West Coast last month. Weis offered Reardon soon after watching him during a spring practice at Lutheran High School, the same program that produced Irish linebacker Anthony Vernaglia.
