Stanback to be the next great QB challenge
Brad Smith, Seneca Wallace, Vince Young, three quarterbacks who helped redefine the landscape of Big 12 Conference football.
The Sooners have been a part of that process. When Oklahoma traveled to Columbia, Mo., in 2002 to take on the Missouri Tigers and Brad Smith, they received their wake up call.
Smith torched the Oklahoma defense on that day as he rushed for 213 yards on 26 carries and completed 19-of-39 passes for 178 yards.
Following that contest, standing outside the visitor's locker room, Mike Stoops emerged with a look of relief on his face. He seemed to be in disbelief at what he'd just seen.
It was new territory for Oklahoma, and new territory for defenses in college football.
But it's becoming increasingly familiar to the Oklahoma staff. Quarterbacks with running back abilities are sprouting up all over the country. And after Young led Texas to a national championship in 2005, offensive coordinators will continue looking for even more.
