Herring turns in trustworthy start

Charlie Weis knows better than to trust Tom Zbikowski.

But the Notre Dame head coach had no trouble putting faith in Ray Herring against Stanford, calling on the sophomore safety to start in place of the injured defensive captain. Weis asked Zbikowski if he could play during week while the senior tried to recover from a sore left shoulder suffered on an awkward hit against Purdue.

"He was running around out there fine, it's just that I told him, 'Look, Zibby, if I ask you if you can go, you'll say you can go and you'd be lying, so we'll leave it at that and see if we can't buy you some time,'" Weis said. "Zibby I know will never tell me the truth when it comes to how he's feeling coming off of that."
