Freshmen find their fits

One snap per Saturday isn't Toryan Smith's idea of a good time. During the first half of Notre Dame's season, the freshman middle linebacker figured that's about how much he's played with the game still in doubt. However, Smith's part may undergo a rewrite as the Irish begin to load up on pass-second opponents including two option offenses.

"Ready or not, here they come," said defensive coordinator Rick Minter. "It's definitely going to come to light, can we line up, bang with people, stop the run and be accountable? They're going to have to be on the field and be productive."
