Spicing things up

USC has been thin on the interior of the defensive line, but a new face is emerging that could help bolster those numbers.

Big No. 99 came into the game against Stanford and made the most of his opportunities, getting a tackle for loss and batting down a pass. We talked to nose guard Averell Spicer about his performance.

Spicer redshirted last season and looked a bit overwhelmed making the transition from high school to college. With more time in the system under his belt, Spicer looks much more comfortable on the practice field.

"This year I can really feel the difference and I am pretty well adapted to the speed of the game," Spicer said after Tuesday's practice. "Last year I was kind of moving a little slow and wasn't getting the hang of it, but I think I have a pretty good grab on it now."
