Irish beat Vols for four-star Smith

It's been more than a year since Notre Dame beat Tennessee on the football field, but the two schools have been going head-to-head in a recruiting battle for safety Harrison Smith of Knoxville Catholic ever since.

The Irish pulled out a narrow decision over the Volunteers on Friday when the four-star prospect pledged his verbal commitment to Notre Dame during an afternoon ceremony at the high school. Smith is the 16th commitment in Notre Dame's 2007 recruiting class and the second from a defensive back.
