Revis to enter NFL draft
Aside from Heisman Trophy finalist/Biletnikoff Award winner/number two overall draft pick Larry Fitzgerald, Darrelle Revis may well be the best player to wear a Pitt football uniform this century. And like Fitzgerald before him, Revis won't be playing his senior season at Pitt, as he announced on Wednesday that he will enter the 2007 draft.
Revis, an Aliquippa native who starred at quarterback in high school and started three years as a cornerback for Pitt, said Wednesday that this represents the next step in his goals, but it wasn't an easy decision.
"Growing up in Aliquippa it was a dream for me to play at the University of Pittsburgh," Revis said. "During the last three years, I couldn't have asked for anything better than to go to the University of Pittsburgh and play football. I'm surrounded by the best coaches and teammates I could ever ask for: they taught me how to be a man, how to live life on my own, they made me stronger mentally and physically. Basically, they made me into a man, and I want to thank them for that.
"That made my decision to bypass my senior year a difficult one. But after talking to Coach Wannstedt and getting information from the NFL from him, I decided to forego my final season and declare for the NFL draft."
Projections vary, but Revis generally trends toward the first two rounds, with some services projecting him as high as a top 15 pick. Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt, having spent 11 years as a head coach in the NFL, was able to provide Revis with information regarding his draft options. Wannstedt said on Wednesday that the feedback was positive.
