Spring football report (3/5)

Young quarterbacks getting lots of reps

One of the hot storylines this spring continues to be the battle for the back-up quarterback job between redshirt freshman Sherrod Harris and true freshman John Chiles.

Both players have been splitting the reps evenly through the first five practices of spring drills and the two young quarterbacks impressed Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis during Saturday's first full-contact team scrimmage.

"We try to keep it basic with the young guys. I thought both John Chiles and Sherrod Harris both did some good things," Davis said.

Like Mack Brown had said earlier in the week, Davis reiterated that the position might not be settled until the fall.

"There is not a depth chart. We are trying to split reps with those guys in the second group," Davis said. "There will be a leader at some point when things shake out after 15 practices, hopefully going into August we will have a number two who has stepped up. If not, then we will just bring it into camp and we'll find out before the first ball game."
