Practice Report #4: Marlon says it's showtime

WILLIAMS SAYS IT'S SHOWTIME

It took linebacker Marlon Williams walking onto the field the first day of spring last week and hearing his name called to realize that he had finally made it.

"The big deal was when Coach Setencich yelled out first base defense and said I was going out there at first string willy (weak side). I knew I had to get the jitters out then, get focused, get sharp and had to know everything. That's when I realized that it was show time."

And this spring thus far has been nothing but show time for the true sophomore who is participating in his first spring. Opportunity came knocking for Williams when projected linebacker Chad Hill went down with an injury earlier in the year that will keep him out for this spring.

"It's a big opportunity because right now I'm really still a freshman," a wide-eyed Williams answered. "To be in a position that I know that if I prove myself and get Coach Setencich on my side and confident in what I can do, then I have a chance at being a three year starter."

It baffles this young defensive mind that this time last year he was busy finishing up his senior year of high school and trying to get his homework done. Now, the Pflugerville native has an opportunity to get significant playing time at the Division-IA level.

"You're in college now and you got to study the game more and your body has to be able to take more physicality during practice. It's so much more of a high level now in my life and it hasn't even been a full year yet."
