KU prospects take the court in Houston
The first day of the Houston Kingwood Classic is complete. While most teams don't get started until Saturday, a number of KU prospects took the court on Friday night. Jayhawk Slant was on hand to get a closer look at Drew Gordon, Xavier Henry, Phillip McDonald and others.
No Limit Soldier:
Drew Gordon and his Oakland Soldiers teammates fell on the opening night to Georgia Elite 1. For the 6-foot-8, 235-pound power forward from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif., it just wasn't his night.
There is no question that Gordon, the No. 16 ranked player in the class of 2008, is going to be a special player in the future. He's got the size and strength to be a difference maker on the both ends of the court. However, Gordon struggled to get anything going on offense due to early foul trouble.
When the final buzzer sounded, Gordon, a five-star prospect, scored just six-points. The No. 6 ranked power forward displayed nice moves around the basket and, most impressively, was a force on the boards.
It's clear that Gordon wasn't at his best on Friday night, but much of that had to due with some early fouls. Again, he can certainly score the basketball, but it's his effort on the defensive end of the court and on the glass that stood out most on Friday night.
