SEC Notebook: Text messaging
To text or not to text, that is the question.
Coaches at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala., this week seem to have different rationales on why they support or dislike the NCAA ban on text messaging that is being put into place Aug. 1.
Some of the conference's coaches want more regulation - certain dates or times they can text prospects, for example. Florida coach Urban Meyer said it is an accepted means of communication for recruits these days and he thinks the ban is wrong. Others have differing views.
"If you want to go back and use the rotary phone, too, say coaches can only use a rotary phone," Meyer said. "Developing relationships with a recruit is how kids make right decisions. Text messaging helps with all those things, getting to know someone.
