August 22, 2007 Hot 11

We're a week-and-a-half away from Arizona State's opening game of the season and has updated it's Hot 11. Find out which players are currently generating the biggest buzz around the Sun Devils' practice facility, led by a player who has been converted from offense to defense.

1. Dane Guthrie -- It took Tranell Morant, Eric Tanner and Luis Vasquez getting hurt for it to happen, but Guthrie getting switched over from tight end to defensive end may be the best and most impacting position switch the team has witnessed this fall. Guthrie played very well in the team's scrimmage last Friday at the left end spot, working against the first and second team offense, recording a sack and a pass deflection. He also had several quarterback hurries and would have picked up another sack had he not been held by Julius Orieukwu. Guthrie looks like a legitimate starter at the position, at least until Vasquez returns from his high ankle sprain. Then it should be a battle.

2. Robert James -- The first-team linebacking group has been as much of a pleasant surprise to the ASU coaching staff as any position group on the roster, and James has been as impressive as any within the unit. In the first series of the team's initial scrimmage at Camp Tontozona, James took Ryan Torain down in space with a helmet to helmet blow, and popped right back up. He's been terrific ever since and appears to be beyond the headache troubles that plagued him throughout last year and into the spring. Athletically, he provides a lot of versatility and fits the scheme that is being run extremely well.
