Freeman `overwhelmed' by news he'll start

Newly announced starting quarterback Kirby Freeman said after today's practice that he believed "there was a pretty good shot" he'd be named the starter.

"I felt in my heart there was a pretty good possibility," Freeman said. "(Coach Randy Shannon) is giving me an opportunity, and I'm going to run with it, not just try to keep my position - we're going to go win ballgames. It's time to play now. It's so far beyond trying to win a job. We're going to move forward."

Freeman could barely contain his excitement over being named the starter.

"I'm overwhelmed," Freeman said. "This is everything I've worked for. I'll be honest - I'm really excited. Now it's time to play ball."

Asked how much he's grown since last year, Freeman joked, "About two inches."
