Signing day pays off against Duke
North Carolina went to overtime to defeat Duke 20-14 on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams, but the Tar Heels really won this game in February when Durham's Greg Little decided to attend UNC rather than sign with Notre Dame.
Little ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns against the Blue Devils, including a 25-yard TD run on the first play of the Tar Heels' only possession in overtime to win the game.
"You can't say enough about Greg Little and his performance, in excess of 150 yards on 26 carries," said UNC coach Butch Davis, who had his contract extended this week. "He made a great run on the sideline earlier in the game. And just his youthful exuberance, jumping up, all pumped up and he got an unsportsmanlike penalty. Two plays or so later, he came up and put his arm around me and said, 'Coach, I promise you that if you give me the opportunity I will help us win this game. I apologize. It won't happen again.'
"Don't you love it when guys can deliver on their promises? That was a great performance by him. He ran hard. He ran physically. He ran tough. It was a good way to end the season for a lot of reasons."
Davis said that Little will probably remain at running back unless a better option arises.
