Holiday season means high school hoops

The week between Christmas and New Year's Day has turned into a very popular one in Texas high school athletics. With football state champions crowned, focus shifts to basketball and there aren't many places in the nation that can boast the tournaments dotting the landscape of the Lone Star state.

With tournaments up and down the I-45 corridor, there is a little high school basketball flavor for everyone. In the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, a number holiday tournaments bring out scouts in bunches. The nationally-renowned Whataburger Invitational is once again welcoming some of the best teams and recruits from Texas. The DISD/Coca-Cola tournament took a hit this season with Duncanville deciding to go out of state for a holiday tournament, but state-ranked teams like DeSoto and South Oak Cliff will still play. The FWISD/Coca-Cola tournament and Plano Wildcat Classic will have solid fields as well.

No tournament in Texas, however, will be more anticipates than the Houston vs. the Nation tournament at the Aldine Campbell Center. The tournament formerly known as the Academy National Invitational will have a bit of a different format this season. With national teams Montverde (FL) Academy, St. Patrick (NJ) and Oak Hill Academy (VA) heading to Houston along with ESPNU, the tournament has gone away from a bracket format and will have scheduled games instead providing interesting match ups for spectators.
