Grading FSU's 2008 Recruiting Class – Defense
Signees: Toshmon Stevens, Everett Dawkins, Markus White
Top Recruit: Markus White
Most Underrated: Toshmon Steven
Biggest Loss: Quinton Coples (North Carolina)
Average Star Ranking: 4
Strengths: With Alex Boston being the only senior defensive end on the roster this past season, you would think that Florida State didn't have a great need at the position but they did and they definitely addressed it. Markus White is the highest ranked prospect in Florida State's class and for good reason, he dominated the junior college ranks on his way to winning National JUCO Defensive Player of the Year honors. Dawkins comes from a great system at Byrnes High School in South Carolina and is physically ready for the next level. Stevens is a raw prospect but impressed defensive ends coach Jody Allen and the Seminole coaches at the Bobby Bowden Football Camp with the way that he moved and his frame.
Weaknesses: If Dawkins ends up moving to defensive tackle, which is a possibility, the class would only have White as an immediate contributor. Stevens will need time to put on adequate weight in order to make an impact at this level.
Analysis: The defensive end position got a player who could likely be an immediate starter in Markus White. They also added depth who can help if injuries were to destroy the position next season.
Needs for next year: The Seminoles will lose Neefy Moffett after next season and depending on how he performs, Everette Brown could make a quick jump to the league. That being said, look for the Seminoles to try to bring in another two or three at the defensive end position next season.
