Red Raiders add their third commit this week

The defensive back position is one in which the Red Raiders are taking very seriously in the 2009 class. They've proven that this week when by landing safety Daniel Cobb out of Killeen Ellison.

Then on Friday came news of another big-time cornerback, also ready to give his commitment to Tech.

"I called Coach Mitchell," said St. Stephens Episcopal athlete D.J. Johnson. "The first thing he said was 'Are you ready to be a Red Raider?' and basically that's how it went."

It's been about a month since the Red Raiders began contacting the 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback/defensive back and since then, Johnson has been nothing but impressed with the Big 12 South school.

"They said that they think that I'm an athlete and that I fit their program because you're not going to find many 6-1 corner backs that can play. I spoke with coach Mitchell and he expressed that he wants me to play corner and that I'd fit in well and play.

"Plus, our colors in football are red and black so I pretty much figured it'd fit me all around. They say that they're excited to have me and they want me aboard."

In his mind, Johnson was sold on Tech and Lubbock when he was able to visit them last weekend for Junior Day.

"I really wanted to know how they were together. Whether they were together all the time or just a family outside of football. I found out that they are and football is actually year round. They all stick together and it's nice."

Georgia and Oklahoma are two schools that are among many that have been contacting Johnson, who says he'll continue to work on his skills so that he can be even better at the next level. The Austin-area prospect becomes the third commitment in Tech's 2009 class.
