Athletic LB expecting offers

Athleticism is the key for Weston (Fla.) MIAMI, Fla. - Cypress Bay linebacker Phil Walker. The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder has the frame to be a productive outside linebacker at the next level but his speed is what sets him apart. At the Nike Combine in Miami, Walker tested extremely well with a 35 inch vertical and a 4.28 shuttle time. He also ran a blistering time in the 40 at 4.5 seconds.

Due to his frame and athleticism, Walker has several schools knocking on his door.

"I'm hearing a lot from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Rutgers and Miami I would say right now," Walker said. "A lot of them just told me to stay working, keep working hard. West Virginia also invited me to the Spring Game on April 19. They told me to call and make reservations. I'm gonna go."

Though none of the schools that have expressed interest in Walker have offered to date, he does think that an offer should come this spring.

"A lot of people told me that they were gonna come down in the spring and they were gonna offer," he said.

Naturally, Walker grew up with some in-state favorites but he is keeping and open mind as the recruiting process approaches.

"Growing up, I was a big Miami fan," he said. "I was also a Florida State fan and a Florida fan. I just liked all the home state teams. During the recruiting process, now it's all about what's the best situation for me when I go on and play on the next level. So I'm real open-minded now."

After splitting time at linebacker as a junior, Walker will be playing every down as a senior in his program's 3-4 defense. After an 11-win season in 2007, Walker will also be counted on to live up to some high expectations that his teammates set for themselves.

"Senior year there's a lot of hype around us," he said. "A lot of people have us predicted as the best corps. What we're doing right now is just working in the weight room, training hard and stuff like this, bonding and coming together. We're gonna make some noise this year."

As for his college decision, Walker is open to committing early but does hope to take all five of his official visits.
