Alston gearing up for camps
Running back Shawne Alston probably feels fairly comfortable with his position at this stage in the recruiting game. The Hampton (Va.) Phoebus back holds three offers, but could emerge with more if his camps go well.
Alston already holds offers from Maryland, Penn State and East Carolina, but a busy camp schedule could improve his stock.
"There's not too much new (going on) other than the offers from East Carolina and Maryland," he recently said. "The East Carolina offer came in about three weeks ago and Maryland about a month ago. Penn State verbally offered me earlier this year but I just talked to them (Thursday) and I'm supposed to be getting the official offer in the mail.
"I plan on going to the Maryland camp and the East Carolina camp. I want to make it to Ohio State if they show enough interest, and West Virginia too."
In addition to the schools that have offered Alston has been hearing from West Virginia, Ohio State, South Carolina State, NC State and Liberty -- a school he says he is not interested in.
He also said he has an idea of who his favorites are at this stage in the process.
"ECU is up there and Maryland is up there too," he said. "Penn State is up there too. Everything is about even though, and I don't plan on committing until after my senior year."
With spring practice gearing up again at most schools, prospects are positioning themselves to improve for the fall and impress as many colleges as they can. What does Alston plan on working on?
"We're lifting weights right now and we start spring camp for two weeks on Tuesday. I'm going to work on my speed. I'm up to almost 225 pounds. What I want to do is drop 10 to 15 pounds, work on my speed and then gain the weight back in muscle."
Last year at Phoebus, Alston rushed for 1,684 yards and 27 touchdowns.
