Vandenberg ready for the next step

After a storybook senior year in which he led Keokuk to the first state title in school history, James Vandenberg is ready for the next step. That step will take him to Iowa City where he will be moving shortly to workout with the Hawkeyes this summer. The record setting quarterback talks about his upcoming freshman year at Iowa and much more.

Q: Have you already graduated?

VANDENBERG: Yep, I graduated last Sunday.

Q: What was it like finishing out the last few weeks of high school?

VANDENBERG: It was good. I had a lot of activities going on with tennis and senior stuff, but it was a fun time and a little stressful too. I'm glad it's over with.

Q: Not a lot of football guys play tennis necessarily. How did you get started in the sport?

VANDENBERG: I played golf my freshman year, but my uncle had always been playing tennis so he kind of got me started. I liked tennis a lot more competitively than I liked golf, so I changed over my sophomore year and loved playing it.

Q: Were you undefeated during the regular season?

VANDENBERG: Yeah. At state, I lost my first match to the guy that got fourth, then I won my second match, and then lost to the guy that got fifth. I think I placed like ninth.

Q: Obviously, you're playing tennis because you like it, but does it help with your footwork and things like that as a quarterback too?

VANDENBERG: Oh yeah. I think it really helps my quickness. It's so much lateral movement back and forth. I've had a bunch of people tell me that they thought it was really helping my footwork.

Q: What else have you been up to since signing day?

VANDENBERG: Just lifting, throwing, and tennis really. Tennis just ended last weekend, so this is my first kind of off week from that. I leave Sunday to move up to Iowa City.
