Fowler speeds to Spartan offer

One of the players in Michigan that is seeing his recruiting stock rise significantly this summer is wide receiver Bennie Fowler of Detroit Country Day School. Fowler posses tremendous speed and could be the deep threat that the Spartans are looking to add to the class of 2009.

This past Friday Fowler was one of the top performers at the Spartan 1-Day Elite Camp. Fowler showed tremendous speed and explosiveness in the testing phase and also performed well in the 7v7 portion. It was later reported that Fowler picked up an offer from Coach Dantonio based on his performance. SpartanMag.com spoke with Fowler's father and got the latest.

"Yes, Bennie was offered by Michigan State, he said. "We were very pleased about that. We spoke with them on Saturday morning and they indicated that they were offering a scholarship. Bennie now has offers from Michigan State, Indiana, Toledo and Eastern Michigan."

In addition to the four teams listed above, Fowler is also looking closely at schools like Penn State, Notre Dame, Michigan and Iowa.

At 6-foot-2-185-pounds Fowler has excellent size to go along with his legitimate 4.4 speed. That size and speed is what makes him an excellent fit as a deep threat in the Spartans pro-style offense. Spartan fans saw what an effective deep threat player like Devin Thomas can do in this offense. The fact that MSU changed from a spread to a pro-style offense certainly impacted him becoming a high NFL draft pick.

According to Mr. Fowler, Bennie plans on visiting a few more schools this summer. A trip out to State College is planned. They have already stopped into Michigan and Notre Dame.

There is some speculation that Fowler could project on the defensive side at the next level. While he does have the size and speed to play on either side of teh ball, his dynamic ability to do good things with the ball in his hands makes offense the more logical position.

Last year Fowler had to overcome a broken collarbone midway through the season, but he was able to return for the playoffs and made some huge plays for Country Day as they made a run all the way to the state championship game.

Being from Country Day, Fowler is familiar with several major programs including Michigan State.

"Bennie is friends Jonas Gray down at Notre Dame and Chris Rucker at Michigan State, he has spoken with both of them," he said.

Fowler is being recruited for the Spartans by Coach Dan Enos. Coach Enos has been recruiting Country Day High School for quite some time no. He has excellent rapport with the staff at DCC from not only his time at Michigan State, but when he was at Cincinnati.
