Ole Miss staff has Ray's attention

Lance Ray is nowhere close to deciding where he wants to play his college football.

However, one particular relationship the Havana (East Gadsden), Fla., athlete has fostered on the recruiting trail sticks out, and it could provide one prospective suitor a significant advantage when things get serious late this fall.

"I've been in contact with (Ole Miss recruiting coordinator/cornerbacks) Coach (Chris) Vaughn a lot lately, more so than any other coach, really. The fact that he's been real honest and straight up with me during the entire process _ he's been opening up Ole Miss and inviting me in _ that's been the biggest thing. Honesty is big."

Ray listed a top eight on Tuesday night, a list that includes Ole Miss, LSU, Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Illinois, Mississippi State and South Florida.

"I'm really looking for where I'm most comfortable," said Ray, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound three-star prospect who is ranked as the No. 97 prospect in the Sunshine State. "Once I get to a place, that's really a lot. I want to be comfortable with the people. I'm really looking for where I'm most comfortable."

Ray recently returned from camp experiences at Alabama and LSU. The trip to Tuscaloosa seemed to stick out over the one to Baton Rouge.

"I felt real good at Alabama," Ray said. "I really like the set-up over there. It's a real short distance. I really enjoyed the Alabama trip. LSU went pretty good, too."

Ray, who will likely play wide receiver, cornerback or safety at the college level, said his plan remains to narrow his list to five schools and take official visits to all five before choosing his college home.

"Basically, I want to see if I can be successful on and off the field," Ray said. "I want to see what will be going on two or three years from now, too."
