Elite corner's phone rings early

September 1 is the first day college coaches can begin making weekly phone calls to their top 2009 prospects. Many elite recruits received multiple calls on Monday and one of the best in country received a call from four top universities.

"Georgia, Tennessee, Florida State, and Michigan called me on Monday," said Branden Smith. "It was cool to talk with the coaches and I talked to all of the defensive back coaches except for FSU, I talked to Coach [Odell] Haggins."

Over the 30 schools across the country have offered the number 27 rated prospect in the country a scholarship. Four stepped up and called on the first day that they were allowed to, so what does that mean to Smith?

"It definitely means something to me. It shows me that they are really thinking about me and being first to call me is very good for them."

The 5-foot-11, 170 pound speedster out of Atlanta (Ga.) Booker T. Washington has played things very cool up until this point, but he plans to make his decision early in January, so these next four months will be big.

"I am still going to commit at the Under Armor All-American game, so it is going to be a hard four months," he admitted. "It is going to be tough thinking about which is the best school for me. I just have to keep it cool, take my time, and make the best decision for myself."
