State’s best kicker to visit Spartans

With scholarships at a premium, Michigan State is looking to put the finishing touches on the class of 2009. One position that the Spartans could still address is kicker. has learned that the best kicking prospect in Michigan for the class of 2009 is going to be in East Lansing soon. Find out more about Kevin Muma of Troy High School.

The 6-0, 175-pound Muma had an outstanding season for the Troy Colts. Playing quarterback and kicker, Muma helped the Colts to a 6-4 record and a playoff berth in the always tough OAA Conference. On the season Muma bother 12 of 19 field goals, including a school record 52-yarder and another 50 yarder. He put close to 80% of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks and was 32 of 35 on extra-points.

Muma was not just the kicker for Troy High, he also served as quarterback. On the season he totaled 966 passing yards and 438 rushing yards. Much like current Spartan punter, Aaron Bates, Muma is an exceptional all-around athlete. In addition to his exploits of the gridiron, Muma is the starting shooting guard for Troy High.
Muma put a lot of hard work in over the offseason. He spent time working with former Detroit Lions All-Pro kicker Eddie Murray. For all of his efforts, he was named All-Conference, All-North, All-Area, All-State and a Free Press Dream Team Selection as a kicker.

As of right now Muma has a scholarship offer from Bowling Green. Michigan State has invited Muma up for an official visit the weekend of the 16th of January. The University of Michigan has offered Muma a preferred walk-on spot. Central Michigan is actively recruiting him and several Ivy League Schools are also interested in the 3.6 GPA student.

The fact that the Spartans are having Muma up for an official visit shows that they are very serious when it comes to his recruitment. The fact that he does not have an offer at this time is an indication of just how tight the Spartans are as far as scholarships.

It is not out of the question that the Spartans could offer Muma a grey-shirt option. A grey-shirt is when a player comes to school as a non-scholarship player and the goes on scholarship as soon as one becomes available during the next year. The fact that All-Big Ten kicker Brett Swenson will be a senior next year means that a kicker's scholarship will be opening up next fall.

The Spartans could offer a situation where Muma comes to Michigan State and red-shirts his first year and then goes on scholarship for the next 4 -years of his eligibility. That would also give Muma the opportunity to work with a kicker who could leave MSU as one of the best in a long line of great Spartan kickers.

The Spartans currently have 18 players on scholarship. The class of 2009 will likely be comprised of 20 players. With prospect like Dion Sims, Henry Conway and Michal Buchan a grey short option for Muma could be a win-win for both parties. The Ohio State Buckeyes have had a slot of success offering similar situations to in-state prospect. will be sure to follow the recruitment of Mum over the coming weeks. If he does end up in Spartan Green he will be the 7th Dream Team member to make a commitment to Coach Mark Dantonio.
