Derby visits hometown Hawkeyes

After an impressive throwing performance at the U.S. Army Combine earlier this month, City High quarterback A.J. Derby has found his stock steadily on the rise. This past weekend, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Derby made a visit to the first school that offered him a scholarship, the hometown Iowa Hawkeyes.

When Iowa first verbally offered a scholarship to Derby during his sophomore year, it was essentially as an athlete as he played mostly safety and wide receiver at the time. This past year however, he moved to quarterback where he quickly made his mark, leading City High to a 10-1 record. Since then, the Hawkeyes have been recruiting him at QB.

As a junior, Derby completed 77 of 136 passes for 1,197 yards and 11 touchdowns and added 1,064 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns on the ground as well. That kind of dual-threat ability has drawn additional scholarship offers from Wisconsin, Stanford, and Cincinnati, and interest across the country.
