Brown eager for Rocky Top trip

It is now the stretch run in completing the class of 2009, and National Signing Day is just over a week away. Each prospect with a hint of an open recruitment is moving toward a final verdict.

Memphis wide receiver Marlon Brown has just one more visit to complete before his decision is made. That trip is to Tennessee this weekend. Brown discussed his visit last weekend to Florida and what the next few days hold for the state's No. 1 prospect.

"It was good," Brown said. "I had a lot of fun. They had good facilities, a good stadium and I liked the people. They definitely moved up in my mind."

Shifting gears to his pending visit to Rocky Top, Brown made it clear that Tennessee is very much on his mind.

"I cannot wait," Brown said with enthusiasm. "I don't know what to expect this weekend. It's a new coaching staff so I don't know to be honest. It's my last visit and it's the last time I'll be a high school athlete visiting a school. I'm from Memphis so I have natural ties to Tennessee. I'm really looking forward to it."

Lane Kiffin has made no secret that Brown is very important to this signing class -- without ever publicly naming Brown. It's been well publicized that Kiffin's first visit once he took the reigns of the Tennessee program was to see Brown. A relationship started that day and continues to build as Brown heads into his final official visit this weekend.

"He's a cool guy to talk to," Brown said. "He's down to earth. He's honest and I ask him some random questions and he's real honest about everything. I like that.

"It means a lot. He could have went to anyone's house, but he came to mine first. It says a lot about how much they want me."

Prospects from several schools have been working on Brown, and he hears all of the chatter that is out there about his recruitment.

"I think it's funny that everyone thinks they know where I'm going," Brown said. "One person will say I'm going to Ole Miss and then another has me going to Georgia. I can't do anything without being asked about it. To be honest, everyone is even. But this entire process can be funny because of all the talk over my commitment."

The person that other prospects and coaches should be working on is Brown's grandmother. He takes her advice to heart and her opinion is very influential ins his life.

"It's very important," Brown said. "If I have a coach and she says, 'I don't know about him?' then that is all I need to know. Her opinion means a lot to me."

Brown's first encounter with Kiffin wasn't alone. His grandmother was in attendance and he says that Kiffin left a good impression on her.

"My grandma was there and she thought he was a cool guy." Brown said.

Following his trip to Knoxville, Brown will return home to think things over. And in his words, things will go down to the very end.

"I think it will go up until the day before signing day," Brown said.

Rivals.com rates Brown a 4-star wide receiver and the 5th-best receiver in the class of 2009.
