Roots, hard work push Nwoke

The Colorado State running game got an in-state boost on signing day when Highlands Ranch prep runner Chris Nwoke inked his National Letter of Intent, pledging the 6-foot, 208-pounder to a career running the ball for the Colorado State Rams. That followed a season that saw Nwoke rush for over 1,700 yards and 34 touchdowns on just 199 carries (8.5 yards per carry).

The Thunder Ridge prep and All-Stater committed to Colorado State in early Jan., choosing the Rams over scholarship offers from Wyoming and New Mexico. After committing to Colorado State, Nwoke took a visit to the University of Wyoming in Jan.

"It was good," Nwoke said about his visit to Wyoming. "We went snowmobiling, we got to know the coaching staff. It was fun. I knew a lot of the guys down there that were from Colorado.

"Colorado State is the one I want to stick with. I planned on going to Utah State and New Mexico but I didn't want to play games with anyone, so I didn't."

Nwoke's hard-working background is something he attributes to his parents. His family comes from Nigeria where it is very well-known.

"Mom and dad from Nigeria," Nwoke said. "Mom's dad was the King of Obuja. M uncle is doing big things with government. They are from Obuja. my grandfather was like a chief. Each small town has a chief or a king of the town, and he was the leader of the town. My uncles and grandpa were hard-working to get where they were. I love my roots to know that they came from nothing to something."

Nwoke, who said Young G, The Game and John Legend are currently the top plays on his iPod, added that he has a very strong Christian. He also offered he is a clean freak and is looking forward to getting on campus this summer.

"I am focusing on getting stronger, faster for the next level and getting ready to compete," Nwoke said. "Everywhere you go there is going to be competition. I want to do what I can where I am at with what I have."
