Spartans keeping close tabs on Schneider

One of the players the Michigan state staff is staying in frequent contact with is Dan Schneider of Avon Lake High School in Ohio. caught up with the 6-foot-4, 235-pound prospect last night and got the latest news on his recruitment and what his future plans are.

Schneider has had a busy last few weeks and has picked up several scholarship offers. When we spoke with him, he had just picked up another offer.

"I just got off the phone with Buffalo, they offered me. I now have five scholarships, Louisville, Bowling Green, Toledo, Kent State and Buffalo," Schneider said.

Over the past few weeks Schneider has been taking in several junior days.

"I started out going to Ohio State," he said. "I also went to Michigan State, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Toledo and Buffalo."

What have the in-state BCS schools been saying?

Cincinnati said they were only going to take 1 tight end for the class and Alex Smith committed to them, so I do think they are an option. Ohio State is keeping in-touch with me. I plan on going down there to see a spring practice."

What are you hearing from Michigan State?

I went to their junior day. It was the second dime I have been to Michigan State. I was up there for the Notre Dame game. I have been talking with Coach Staten a lot. He said he is not sure what they are going to do about the tight end spot. He did say they are looking for a fullback spot so that is something I am going to speak with them about."

In addition to the Spartans, a host of other teams are also in frequent contact. Many of the Big Ten schools are actively recruiting him as well as several other BCS programs.

"I have been speaking with Pittsburgh quite a bit as of late. They seem like they are real interested and I think I am going to go down there for a visit. Air Force is another school that seems like they are very interested.

As far as when a decision could be made, Schneider indicated that he is not in a hurry and wants to make sure he makes an informed decision.

"I think I am going to explore my options for a bit. I have been told you will know when you find the right place. If I get that feeling before my season I will make my choice, if not I will wait.

The Spartans will certainly like to have Schneider on campus this summer for session of camp. At the camp you can be sure they will have him work with several different position coaches. A player like Schneider can help a team in a lot of ways and that may be what eventually helps him get multiple BCS offers.

Note As we were writing this update, Schneider sent a text to and informed us that the Ohio Bobcats have now offered, bringing his total to six.

Schneider is the teammate of offensive lineman Christian Pace. Pace is high on the Michigan State recruiting board and also could be offered this summer with a strong showing at camp.
