Aggies kick off the spring with two-a-days
Texas A&M hit the practice fields for the first time this spring Thursday as the Aggies opened their spring drills to officially mark the second season of the Mike Sherman era in Aggieland, and the Aggies ushered in spring drills with a new look.
Unlike any spring in recent memory, Sherman has his Aggies practicing two times a day this spring with A&M opening drills at 6 a.m. with an hour long practice and another hour-and-a-half in the afternoon.
"I thought the morning was very intense. We got a lot done. It was the passing game so it wasn't as much man-on-man competition as it was this afternoon, and I thought that competition played out where you might have seen that type of demeanor," Sherman said. "I thought both ends of it were good today for the most part. Every day we have a winner and a loser and today it went to the defense. I think it's important to know if you won the drill or didn't win the drill, so we keep points throughout practice and I think that inspired them a little bit this afternoon. We didn't do that this morning since I saved it for this afternoon. The defense actually won handily this afternoon. The offense made too many mistakes and lost some points."
The Aggies practiced on the outdoor fields in the morning and moved indoors in the afternoon due to thunderstorms that pounded College Station throughout the day.
But even with the weather playing havoc on the Aggies on their first day of spring drills, it was evident that the entire team from the coaching staff to the players were on the same page - something that couldn't had been said last year in the spring.
"I think the guys are working hard. I think it's a little bit easier this year in the relationship of what they can expect from us and from me and so forth. They're really working hard," Sherman said. "It doesn't mean that everything is perfect. There are some things out here that normally happen on first days no matter if you're in high school, college or professional, that happened, but I think the guys gave great effort and took a step forward today.
"Just from an overall philosophy, the attitude and a chemistry standpoint we're ahead of where we were this time last year, and certainly their familiarity with me and mine with them as well."
