Spring Report - DL

Probably the main reason that Chuck Bullough was hired to replace DeWayne Walker as UCLA's defensive coordinator was continuity. No one who has been watching UCLA football since the departure of Bob Toledo has to be reminded what a revolving door of assistant coaches the program went through.

Though Bullough came in with Walker, it is still a change and for that reason alone there will be eyes on the defense to see if they play with the same intensity and fire that they did under Walker when he took the nation's 115th ranked and with a change of attitude made a bunch of overachievers into one of the Pac 10's best units.

The Bruin defense will also be breaking in two new defensive back coaches in Bruin and NFL greatCarnell Lake and veteran coach, Tim Hundley.

Defense is usually ahead at this stage of the game so with the offense testing quarterbacks, running backs, trying to find five bigs that can protect and open holes it might be hard to get a feel what kind of defense this one will be. It may take until games are played in earnest to see how this unit is truly going to perform.

One thing that is for sure the Bruins will be lining up in junior Brian Price one of the best defensive tackles on the D-I level. Price has worked very hard this offseason to get himself in the kind of shape he needs to be in to dominate for four quarters. If he succeeds and doesn't have to spend a lot of time on the bench to get his wind back then this young man could have a season for the ages. He has that type of talent.
