Hutchins setting the bar high for himself

There is one player in the 2009 recruiting class that Mississippi State fans would rather not see hit the field.

But inevitably when it comes time to punt the Bulldogs will be able to rely on junior college All-American Heath Hutchins to get the job done.

The ever confident midyear transfer from Itawamba Community College has already set lofty goals for himself for the 2009 season.

"My goal is to not have any return yards," Hutchins said. "I want to get All-SEC. I'll let a senior get All-American because I'm sure he worked hard for it. I don't want to take it from a senior. I'll shoot for All-SEC and no return yards."

Hutchins punted 93 times during his career for a 44 yard average for the Indians. He led the country in punting during his sophomore season averaging 46.1 yards including a long of 69-yards. Hutchins also has a streak of six consecutive games in which he pinned his opponents inside the 2-yard line.

He is willing to sacrifice some of his punting average in order to ensure that he doesn't outkick his coverage.

"I'm probably going to have a little less average because I'm going to kick it a little higher," Hutchins said.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder has completed five practices this spring at MSU and has more confidence in his coverage unit at State.
