Joeckel leads Arlington as favorites at 7-on-7

Arlington quarterback and Texas A&M commit Matt Joeckel is something of an old hand when it comes to state 7-on-7 tournaments.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Joeckel and his teammates are making their fourth trip to College Station since they began playing together in junior high.

"We started this 7-on-7 team after our sixth grade year," Joeckel said. "We've added just a couple of new guys. We did our freshman tournament here. We have been playing here (at A&M) for a long time. We are comfortable with everything.

"We won state three years in a row starting in eighth grade. Our freshman and junior varsity teams won too. We played the same teams as we play now. We didn't have that good of showing last year because it was a new experience for us."

The Colts have to be rated as one of the favorites going into the tournament given the quality of their talent, which includes Joeckel and junior wideout Miles Onyegbule and experience in playing in such tournaments.

It doesn't hurt that the Colts are predominantly a passing team even in the regular season which makes the 7-on-7 experience especially valuable for them.
