Henderson adds offers
After combining for nearly 3,000 yards of total offense as a junior at Southeast Raleigh High School in Raleigh, N.C., Gabriel Henderson quickly picked up his first scholarship offer.
"Kent State offered in January or the beginning of February," Henderson said. "They came before to the school and asked for my highlight tape then went back to their school and called my coach. They offered a full scholarship offer. It was a relief to get that first one."
The Golden Flashes had some help in finding Henderson. KSU assistant coach Jerry McManus coached at East Carolina with Henderson's current high school coach, Daniel Finn.
That relationship already has helped the Golden Flashes in the recruiting process.
"My coach said (KSU) we run the exact same plays that KSU runs, so he said if I go there it would be a good fit," Henderson said.
Henderson will visit Kent State on Thursday before returning to North Carolina for a 7-on-7 passing tournament on Saturday.
"I want to spend some time and view the campus," he said.
Shortly after picking up the offer from Kent State, Henderson added an offer from the Mid-American Conference East Division champion Buffalo Bulls. Western Carolina, Liberty and NC Central quickly followed suit.
"NC State and Georgia Tech said they are on the verge of offering," Henderson said. "They have to go to a meeting, so I'm just waiting on that."
Henderson camped at Georgia Tech, Tennessee and East Carolina this summer.
"I liked them all," he said. "I think I did really well at the camps."
At this point, Henderson said he's open to any school willing to give him a chance to play quarterback in college.
"I don't have any favorites," he said. "I'm open to any school. I'm just waiting it out just a little longer."
Henderson doesn't plan to wait long as he has high hopes for his senior season.
"Basically, everyone is returning from last year and we had like 15 returning starters," he said. "Our goal is to win states this year."
