Our lunch with Neuheisel - Part I

On Pac 10 media one of the benefits of showing up is you have lunch with Coach Rick Neuheisel and the media has the opportunity to pepper the Bruin coach with questions. In part one of this three-part series, Neuheisel is asked what allows him to be relentlessly optimistic about his offense and a lot more. Enjoy!

What do you see that allows you to be relentlessly optimistic with your offense?

Neuheisel: "Weight room and freshmen. The weight room has been successful in terms of what (strength and conditioning coach) Mike (Linn) has gotten done there and freshmen coming in and showing they were as advertized athletically gives you hope, if not ready to play right away to create competition at the positions, which will enhance the position itself. I just believe we will be better.

"I know the coaching staff knows who we are a heck of a lot better than we did last year. We knew in spring ball, but we didn't know relative to the conference so having taken the lap, now knowing what we can and can't do, our game plans will be more to that point and now we have to get lucky with injuries, but at this point, there is reason for optimism.

That the coaching staff knows what you are, who are you as a team?

Neuheisel: "We're going to be able to run the ball or die trying this year and because of that, assuming that goes well, then the throwing game will open itself, especially the play action throwing game and with Kevin Prince's ability, assuming he can stay healthy and be as advertized that generates a lot of chunk offense, because of his ability to get the ball downfield and big plays, we were devoid of them last year.

"If we can create some big plays early and create some confidence in big plays then all of a sudden that opens up basically, expands air, into your offense.

"A year ago we kept getting closer, closer and closer we would get suffocated and we were done."
