Piurowski lost for the season

Florida State senior tight end Caz Piurowski suffered a season-ending right knee injury in the first quarter of Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.

"Surgery will be warranted in the next week or two," Florida State director of sports medicine Randy Oravetz said. An MRI examination of the knee Monday revealed torn anterior cruciate (ACL) and medial collateral (MCL) ligaments.

Piurowski was injured while blocking on Jermaine Thomas' 3-yard touchdown run at the end of the Seminoles' opening drive of the game.

The Land O'Lakes, Fla. native was in the midst of one of the best seasons by an FSU tight end. With 13 receptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns, Piurowski had already established single-season career-highs for receptions, yards and touchdowns. His 53-yard reception against Jacksonville State was the longest of the season by an FSU receiver and the longest by a Seminole tight end since Lonnie Johnson in 1993.

"He's played every game since he's been here and is one of our only seniors on offense," FSU coach Bobby Bowden said of Piurowski. "He was a very important part of our blocking scheme. He's a very skillful, solid receiver at tight end. We will miss him."

Piurowski played in 39 games and made 24 starts, including each of the last 16 games. Entering the Georgia Tech game he had caught at least one pass in six consecutive games, dating to the Champs Sports Bowl, when he collected his first career touchdown reception.

A second-generation Seminole - his father Paul Piurowski played linebacker for Bowden - Piurowski finishes he career with 33 receptions for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
