Shead moves up list
Wildcats' Shead moves to second on career list
Cayuga's Traylon Shead moved into second place on the career rushing list in Texas high school football.
But that is not the first thing head coach Tommy Allison talked about Saturday morning after the Wildcats' 66-0 win over Cushing.
Allison wanted to talk about his defense, which held Cushing to minus yardage for the game.
"The biggest thing I saw last night was that our defense played really good football," Allison said. "To hold a team to negative yardage means you did something right."
The Cayuga defense held Cushing to minus-15 yards - minus-12 rushing and minus-3 passing. The Wildcats also forced three turnovers including an interception by Shak Jenkins that was returned for a 49-yard touchdown.
"I think we are finally starting to find an identity on defense," Allison said. "The kids are starting to figure our what we are doing and going out and executing the game plan."
On the other side of the ball, Shead moved into a place in Texas high school football history. After his 269 rushing yards against Cushing, Shead has 8,885 career yards, moving past Wes Danaher of C.C. Calallen. The Cayuga senior only trails Kenneth Hall of Sugarland, who holds the record with 11,232 yards.
"Traylon set himself apart at a very elite level," Allison said. "But even though he became the No. 2 rusher in the state of Texas, we don't need to know that to know how special of a kid he is."
In the last three weeks, the Cayuga offense has exploded. In three straight wins, the Wildcats have scored 61, 58 and 66 points. Cayuga also has over 540 yards of offense in each win.
"We have been able to move the ball different ways which makes us a better football team," Allison said. "We are also getting a lot of people involved and that has been really important for our success."
