Oregon's QB History Re-Written x 2 in 2009 By Duo of Coaches Kids

We have touched on it. Talked about it. Asked questions and done research on it. But the questions are still out there somewhat.

One thing we do know. 2009 is the year that the two best quarterbacks in Oregon High School history are playing. Records are falling right and left this year.

Thanks to the amazing efforts of two special and rare quarterbacks records are being made. Independence, Oregon is the home of Central High and starting Quarterback Grant Hedrick. Grant is the son of Central's Head Coach Shane Hedrick. The Panthers have had an amazing run during Grant's time at the helm.

Without knowing it yet Grant is breaking records in several categories including Most Touchdowns ever at 145 and Most yards ever at 11,234 for his passing and rushing totals. Both are current records for the State by a wide margin.

South down I-5 is Eugene, Oregon. That is the domain of the Sheldon Irish and Quarterback Jordy Johnson. Johnson is the better known of the duo. His father is long time Sheldon Head Coach Marty Johnson. Jordy led his troops to the 2007 State title as a Sophomore.

Johnson is the most accurate passer of all time and likely has the highest QB Rating in State History as well. His completion ratio is 72%. That means he connects on his passes more then 7 out of 10 times. This breaks the record in that category.

But Johnson who we thought could break 10,000 yards has now not only done that but eclipsed 11,000 this past week in his big win over Canby in the State 6A Semi Finals. In that game Johnson threw 19 for 24 for 347 yards with 4 TD's and no interceptions.

Johnson is now sitting at 11,061 in total yards of offense both passing and rushing. He has 1 Game left. The Oregon State 6A High School Championship this weekend at Reser Stadium in Corvallis. His team faces the always tough Jesuit Crusaders. He averages over 300 yards so it will be close but he should eclipse Hedrick in the overall yardage category.

It is of little consequences to either and they as of the writing of this story not aware of their standing. Without the help of Mal VanMeer, Football Historian, we could not have tracked these figures at all.

What we are witnessing in these two is the greatest Quarterback performances in history. As fans we take it for granted. They are both Coaches sons and surrounded with solid players. Having said that others have had these same factors and have achieved far less.

Both athletes are excellent Rushers and possess the intangibles of leadership, great route reading ability, and tremendous Football IQ. Both are products of two of the finest Coaches and High School systems in the State.

It is no surprise that Sheldon and Central High have excellent programs all the way around. Great Coaches make good players and good people better. There is no exception here.

No surprise also that these two are friends and spent the winter attending various work outs and camps together. They have thrown a lot of footballs....a whole lot.

Hedrick is heading to Boise to be the new QB for the Boys of the Blue Turf; the Boise State Broncos.

Johnson holds offers from Army, Air Force, Montana, and Portland State. He will likely net additional offers as the season wraps up. He plays both ways and is an excellent defender as well.

Johnson sits on a career QB rating of 132 NFL and 189 NCAA. These are Huge Numbers.

Hedrick has a 130.5 NFL Rating and a 187 NCAA Rating. Again Amazing.

The Top NFL QB's generally are in the 110 to 140 range. Top NCAA QB's like Claussen and Tebow lead the class of 2009 with 189 and 191. So this pair is putting up tremendous numbers in that light.

The QB Rating does not look at Rushing or rushing Td's. Both of these guys have been amazing carrying the ball. Look at at these career figures:

Statistic                                      Hedrick                                   Johnson

Passes Attempted                            805                                             762

Passes Completed                          527                                             545

Completion %                                   65%                                           71.5%

Passing TD's                                    103                                               82

Interceptions                                       14                                               19

Total Passing Yards                    7,975                                          7,944

Rushing Attempts                            404                                             448

Rushing Yards                              3,259                                          2,900

Avg per Carry                                    8.06                                              6.5

Touchdowns                                        42                                               45

Total Touchdowns                            145                                            130

Total Yards                                   11,230                                      11,061*

*This includes 217 yds and 3 TD's receiving

What a great pair of young men. These figures are amazing. When you consider the great QB's we have had in recent years like Kellen Clemens, Derek Anderson, Erik Ainge, and Joey Harrington.

Best of luck to them both. They have rewritten the books in many categories beyond those that we have mentioned here.
