Wright commits to USC despite uncertainty

SAN ANTONIO - This has been a trying two days for USC commitments following reports that head coach Pete Carroll is close to a deal to be the next head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. The uncertainty around Carroll's future certainly has also had an affect on the uncommitted prospects as well.

One of those prospects is Corona, Calif. safety Demetrius Wright.

Wright has had USC near the top of his list for some time and had narrowed his list to the Trojans, Tennessee, Arizona and Washington.

However, after the news of Carroll's possible departure came to light on Friday, Wright nearly put the breaks on his commitment announcement.

On Saturday morning, Wright reconsidered and decided to go through with his decision. During the first quarter of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Wright committed to USC, Carroll or no Carroll.

"I'm going to stay strong to my team," Wright said. "I wanted to go there since I was little. You have to do what you have to do and I'm going to do what I have to do."

Despite the uncertainty, USC is still the school of Wright's dreams and presents opportunities for him on the field.

"USC is a dream school and I dreamed about going there," he said in a previous interview. "It looks pretty good right now at cornerback with everyone leaving at either corner or safety."

Though he has great size and physicality, Wright has shown the versatility to line up at either cornerback or safety. This week in San Antonio he has been needed more at the cornerback position and has excelled throughout as one of the top defensive backs on the West squad.

Wright is a ranked as the No. 10 safety prospect in the nation and the No. 102 prospect overall by Rivals.com.
