MT impressive in doubleheader sweep

It was a good night for Blue Raider basketball on Saturday, as both the men and women claimed important Sun Belt wins at Murphy Center in a Saturday night doubleheader.

Brown sets record in huge rout

The Lady Raiders humiliated North Texas 119-51 behind a record setting performance by senior Brandi Brown.

Brown hit seven of her eight 3-point attempts to set a new individual school cereer record for most made 3-pointers, while the 119 points scored set a new school record for most points in a game.

Three Lady Raiders scored 20 or more points and the team nailed 20 shots from behind the arc to tie a school record.

QUOTABLE - "When we shoot and hit threes like we did today, we can play anybody in the country. If we can maintain that for another 10-to-12 games, that is going to be the difference in our basketball team. We are passing the ball a lot better now and we are getting a little healthier. That is the bottom line. Jackie (Pickel) felt better today, Brandi felt better today and Anne Marie (Lanning) felt better today. Alysha's been banged up all year too and so has Chelsia (Lymon). When we feel good, we can play a little better so I was real proud of them." - Head coach Rick Insell

STAT BOOK

  • MT scored 53 points off 34 North Texas turnovers. That is two more points than North Texas scored in the entire game.

  • MT's largest lead was 72 points.

  • Discounting Chelsia Lymon, who hit just 1-of-6 shots from behind the arc, the rest of the Lady Raiders hit 19-of-28 from long range.

  • MT had 27 assists on 43 made baskets.

Blue Raiders extend win streak to five

The men's game was much tighter than the laugher that the Lady Raiders won.

MT gutted out a 69-64 win over North Texas to extend its win streak to five games and stay in a tie for first in the Sun Belt's East division.

The Blue Raiders overcame foul trouble to win a very physical game that included 47 combined fouls and 57 combined free throw attempts.

Despite the tight score, MT never trailed in the game and led by double figures on a few different occasions.

Montarrio Haddock scored 15 points to lead the Raiders, but four players were in double figures overall, including Rod Emanuel who had 12 off the bench.

Freshman David Murray also played a big role in the win as a reserve. With Desmond Yates and J.T. Sulton facing foul trouble, Murray's number was called to provide some second half minutes.

He responded by scoring seven points in seven minutes of action to help keep the Mean Green at bay.

QUOTABLE - "I've had to have the mindset that nothing is going to be given to me. I maybe came into (college) thinking that I could just walk up and everything was going to be handed to me. I had to really take a good look at it and see that I really had to work for everything I was going to get. In high school I could go to practice and be laid back ... but I see here you have to work every day to get better. I hope (I earned more minutes tonight)." - David Murray

    STAT BOOK

  • MT scored 21 points off 14 North Texas turnovers. The Mean Green scored just 5 points off MT turnovers.

  • MT outscored North Texas 30-20 in the paint despite a significant size disadvantage in the interior.

  • North Texas was limited to just 32 percent shooting in the first half.

  • North Texas point Josh White hit just 2-of-9 field goal attempts (22 percent). No other Sun Belt opponent has held him to that low of a shooting percentage this season.

  • MT scored 12 second chance points on just seven offensive rebounds.
