Rams-Spartans headline top CA matchups for Week 2

St. Mary's at No. 2 De La Salle

The Rams come into this highly anticipated matchup with an offense that looks to be in midseason form already. St. Mary's scored a combined 78 points in victories over Granite Bay and Central Catholic. But those defenses aren't quite like facing De La Salle, who have four Division I college prospects on the defensive side of the football. Seniors Dylan Wynn, Blake Renaud and Antoine Pickett and junior Michael Barton form the core of what might be the best defense in California. The Spartans' offense isn't bad either, as junior quarterback Bart Houston leads an offense that also includes running backs Devin Williams and Lucas Dunne. With De La Salle getting this game at home, a blowout seems likely.

Coastal Southern California GOTW

Oaks Christian at No. 8 St. Bonaventure

The Trevor Gretzky era did not get off to a good start, as Oaks Christian fell to Alemany 20-17 two weeks ago at home. But head coach Bill Redell and his talented coaching staff had an extra week off to prepare for St. Bonaventure, who demolished Long Beach Poly last week. Oaks Christian loves to throw, and the Lions have plenty of targets in wide receivers Jordan Payton, Blair Holliday and Trey Smith and tight end Dillon Van Der Wal. While the Seraphs picked off Poly four times in their opener, the Jackrabbits' passing game isn't on the same level as Oaks Christian's, who should score a big upset on the road.

Inland Southern California GOTW

No. 14 Mater Dei at No. 4 Centennial

While this game doesn't feature two teams from the Inland Division, the matchup has huge implications for schools in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. A Centennial win over Mater Dei would be a testament that the Inland Empire schools deserve more respect, as the Monarchs are one of the Pac-5's most respected programs. Head coach Matt Logan and the Huskies steam rolled Birmingham in their opener, and with no quarterback controversy this year the offense should be better. But does the defensive backfield have the speed to match up with Mater Dei's Victor Blackwell? Expect big offensive numbers from both sides, with a final Husky drive sealing the deal at home.

San Diego GOTW

No. 7 Mira Mesa at No. 5 Oceanside (at El Camino High School)

Sophomore quarterback Tofi Pao Pao showed a tremendous amount of poise on the road last week, where the Pirates upset top-ranked Chaparral. But can the young signal-caller put together two strong back-to-back games? Don't forget that two weeks ago against Servite, Pao Pao turned the ball over five times, which included four interceptions. He'll have his hands full again this week with a talented Mira Mesa secondary that includes Anthony Payne and Nicholas Payne. The twin brothers are both 6-foot-1 and love to make plays on the football. The Marauders almost scored a huge upset on the road in Week One against Vista. This time we think Mira Mesa gets the upset.
