BulldogBlitz Players of the Week

After each win, BulldogBlitz recognizes several players that had outstanding performances that played a major role in Mississippi State's win. Go inside to see who publisher Logan Lowery chose as the offensive, defensive, special teams, freshman and coach of the week were.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Quarterback Chris Relf
Junior * 6-4 * 240 * Montgomery, Ala.

Passing:
8-of-13 for 135 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions Rushing: 21 carries for 97 yards

Logan's take: In his first game playing from start to finish, Relf managed the offense the best I've seen him do in his career. It was by no means perfect and even though he put the ball on the ground, juggled it in his hands a few times and tossed an interception that was later called back, he ended the night without a turnover. Opposing teams understand he isn't much of a passer and is likely to take off running at any moment but still can't seem to stop him consistently even with the box stacked.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox
Sophomore* 6-4 * 300 * Yazoo City, Miss.

Defense:
Five tackles (one solo, four assists), 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sack.

Logan's take: Cox may not have led the team in tackles but seemed to make his presence felt on every play he was on the field. He applied pressure was in Aaron Murray's grill all night. I believe it was Cox's best game to date. It's pretty amazing that someone who has put on 60-pounds since his arrival on campus has seemingly retained all of his speed. It was a shame to see Ben Jones try to take his knee out with a cheap shot with just over a minute left while trailing a play.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Kicker Sean Brauchle
Senior * 5-10 * 180 * Biloxi, Miss.

Field goals :
1-of-1 from 44-yards; Kickoffs: two kickoffs for 139 yards, one touchback

Logan's take: Both Brauchle and Derek DePasquale did a fantastic job kicking off Saturday night which has been a struggle all season long. Brauchle kicked off the final two times putting one in the end zone and the other at the 1-yard line. He also drilled a 44-yard field goal to put MSU up 10-6 early on in the fourth quarter after missing his only other attempt in the season opener.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK:

Safety Nickoe Whitley
Redshirt Freshman * 6-0 * 200 * Jackson, Miss.

Defense:
Four tackles (three solo, one assist), one forced fumble, one fumble recovery

Logan's take: Whitley's hit on Washaun Ealey at the goal line was vicious enough to jar knock both Ealey's helmet and ball into the end zone. The ball landed right next to Ealey's foot but he appeared so disoriented that he didn't even look for it. Whitley alertly dove on the ball and after review the ball was given to MSU at the 20-yard line avoiding an almost certain Georgia tying touchdown.

COACH OF THE WEEK:

Offensive line coach and run game coordinator John Hevesy

Logan's take:
There were plenty of coaches deserving of this award but was no unit that was more improved over a week's time than the offensive line. This was the type of performance that everyone was expecting coming into the season with an experienced group. Late in the game they dominated Georgia's defensive front to sustain drives through the running game. They also didn't allow a single sack which is very important for a quarterback that is still gaining experience like Relf to trust his offensive front.
