Practice Continues for Marshall Game
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team finished putting in its game plan for Marshall this weekend with a two and a half hour practice at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility here Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles and Thundering Herd meet for the sixth time in their football histories with Southern Miss holding a 4-1 advantage in the series. Marshall grabbed its only win in the series, 34-27, when the two teams met at The Rock to start the 2008 C-USA schedule.
Southern Miss will look to avoid that this time and try to overcome a slew of early-season injuries, including one to junior wide receiver DeAndre Brown who has a lower leg strain and sophomore offensive lineman, Joe Duhon, who has a leg injury which was sustained last Saturday at Louisiana Tech.
Third-year coach Larry Fedora said that no decision has been made on the status of either player for this weekend's game.
"It is still day-to-day and I do not know when we are going to pull the trigger," Fedora said.
Fedora also discussed after practice that the team will also have to contend with Marshall quarterback Brian Anderson, who has thrown for 850 yards over the first four games on 78-of-131 passes with seven touchdown throws to go along with only five interceptions.
"He has definitely gotten better and he has picked up there scheme pretty quickly," said Fedora of the opposing quarterback. "They are taking advantage of his skills."
Kickoff for the Conference USA opener against the Thundering Herd is set for 7 p.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium. The game can be seen nationally on CBS College Sports (735 Comcast Digital and 393 Comcast HD in Hattiesburg) as well as heard on the affiliates of the Southern Miss ISP Sports Network.
