Wolfpack routs Boston College, 44-17

Russell Wilson led the NC State Wolfpack (5-1, 2-1 ACC) to their first win over Boston College (2-3, 0-2) in the Tom O'Brien era, eclipsing 300 yards passing for the fourth week in a row, and fifth time this season. Wilson finished the day throwing for 328 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, and also led the team in rushing in the 44-17 victory at Carter-Finley Stadium. The redshirt junior quarterback gained 45 yards on 14 carries while tying the school record with 38 pass completions.

"We're not perfect, but we're certainly happy to be 5-1," O'Brien said. "It's nice to have this win, but we have a huge game coming up. I think our legs were heavy today, which is understandable after our last two opponents. But credit our guys because they gutted it out."

NC State took the opening kickoff and marched down on a 14-play drive, but a holding penalty on redshirt sophomore right tackle R.J. Mattes prevented a chance to for a fourth-down and one opportunity.

Fifth-year senior kicker Josh Czajkowski settled for a 40-yard field goal with 9:04 left in the first quarter to give NC State a 3-0 lead.

NC State's defense stuffed Boston College on its first series. The Eagles went back to punt, and freshman safety Dontae Johnson knifed in and blocked it at the BC 9-yard line, the Wolfpack's third blocked punt of the season. Fellow freshman safety D.J. Green recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown and 10-0 lead with 8:04 left.

"Certainly, that blocked punt was a big play for us," O'Brien said. "Anytime you can score on special teams is big."

Wilson threw his fifth interception of the season in a bad spot to throw one. His pass was wide to redshirt junior tight end George Bryan, and Boston College senior linebacker Mark Herzlich was in the right spot to pick it off and returned it a few yards to the Wolfpack 18-yard line. The Eagles however were unable to punch it in for a touchdown and had to settle for a 23-yard field goal with 14:47 left in the half by redshirt freshman Nate Freese, who had missed a 40-yard attempt in the first quarter.

NC State answered though with a 7-play, 76-yard touchdown drive highlighted by a Wilson to redshirt junior tight end George Bryan 37-yard pass on third and nine from the NC State 40 to the Boston College 23, and then two plays later Wilson found senior receiver Owen Spencer for a 23-yard touchdown with 12:31 left in the half. It was Spencer's first touchdown catch of the year.

Czajkowski's point after touchdown made it 17-3, and Czajkowski set a new school record with 99 made extra points in his career on the kick.

The Wolfpack added to their lead with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to fifth-year senior Darrell Davis with 6:38 left in the half, giving State a 24-3 lead. The drive was set up by sophomore safety Brandan Bishop's interception at the NC State 40.

Boston College used a long kickoff 47-yard kickoff return from senior corner DeLeon Gause to set up its first touchdown of the game. The Eagles sophomore quarterback Dave Shinskie found senior receiver Ifeanyi Momah for a 15-yard touchdown with 2:21 left before halftime, cutting State's lead to 24-10.

NC State's two-minute offense was able to generate a successful 44-yard field goal attempt by Czajkowski with 9.4 seconds left, giving State a 27-10 lead at halftime.

NC State's defense got into the scoring act when redshirt sophomore cornerback C.J. Wilson returned a poorly thrown Shinskie pass 28 yards for a touchdown with 10:06 left in the third quarter to give the Wolfpack a 34-10 lead. NC State has now scored on offense, defense and special teams, against the Eagles.

The rout continued with a Wilson to fifth-year senior Jarvis Williams six-yard touchdown with 13:37 left in the game, giving the Pack a 41-10 lead. Williams was originally ruled out at the 1-yard line, but the play was overturned and ruled a touchdown after an official review.

Czajkowksi's third field goal of the game, this time a 31-yarder with 7:40 left in the contest, made it 44-10.

Boston College sophomore quarterback Mike Marscovetra completed a 67-yard pass to Alex Amidon with 5:43 left to make it 44-17. Boston College had recorded their first first down of the second half earlier in the 4-play, 90-yard drive.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Mike Glennon relieved Wilson after the Boston College touchdown, and he completed 3 of 4 passes for 19 yards in State's 44-17 win.
