MSU: Choice about money

ESPN reported late Tuesday night that "two sources who recruit for Mississippi State", also known as coaches, informed MSU's compliance office in January "that quarterback Cam Newton and his father each admitted in separate phone conversations that his college choice would be about money."

According to the report, the two Mississippi State coaches claimed Newton's father, Cecil Newton, said "it would take more than a scholarship" to sign his son.

The Mississippi State coaches, according to ESPN, informed Cecil Newton they would not entertain the request and informed the Southeastern Conference of the proposition.

Cam Newton allegedly informed the State coaches that his father decided on Auburn because "the money was too much."

Newton, the No. 1 junior college prospect in the 2010 class, committed to Auburn Dec. 31 and has since led the Tigers to a 10-0 record.

Auburn has been aware of the allegations surrounding Newton's recruitment, which first became public last week in an ESPN.com story, and has maintained he is eligible.

"I haven't done anything wrong," Newton said on two separate occasions last week.

Cecil Newton has also denied the allegations.
