BulldogBlitz Players of the Week

After each win, BulldogBlitz recognizes several players that had outstanding performances that played a major role in Mississippi State's win. Go inside to see who publisher Logan Lowery chose as the offensive, defensive, special teams, freshman and coach of the week were.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Quarterback Chris Relf
Junior * 6-4 * 240 * Huntsville, Ala.

Passing:
18-of-23 passing for 281 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Rushing: 15 carries for 30 yards and one touchdown.

Logan's take: Relf continued his trend of hot quarterback play from the final two regular season games into the bowl. Relf proved that he can be a definite threat in the passing game and made accurate and smart decision. He has improved each game as the season has progressed and is leaps and bounds better than he was at the end of the 2009 season. If he continues to improve as much in this offseason as he did the last then the sky is the limit on where he can take the Bulldogs as a senior.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Cornerback Johnthan Banks
Sophomore * 6-2 * 180 * Maben, Miss.

Defense:
four tackles (three solo, one assist), one interception and two pass deflections.

Logan's take: Banks had probably the worst quarter of his still young career to open the Gator Bowl. Denard Robinson picked on him during the first quarter and he was pulled off the field at one point. But after what looked like a stern talking to on the sideline he came in and played his best three quarters of the year in my opinion. I still feel like he is better suited at safety on defense and will likely move back there in the offseason.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK:

Athlete Marvin Bure
Junior * 5-8 * 190 * Vicksburg, Miss.

Special Teams:
One blocked punt

Logan's take: Bure has been a standout on special teams for the Bulldogs all season long. Saturday he came up big when the game was still close blocking a punt. State was unable to put the ball in the end zone and had to settle for a field goal but Bure's block helped set the offense to go up 10-7 in the early going. Bure is one of the fastest players on the roster and has definitely used his speed to his advantage on Saturday.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK:

Running back LaDarius Perkins
Redshirt Freshman * 5-10 * 190 * Greenville, Miss.

Rushing:
Nine carries for 40 yards Receiving: two catches for 79 yards Kickoff Return: two returns for 36 yards

Logan's take: Perkins continued to be an effective all-purpose back just as he was in the Egg Bowl. He led the team with 155 all-purpose yards in the game. His 81 yards catch out of the backfield against Michigan was the Bulldogs longest play from scrimmage this season. I was shocked to see him get caught from behind because he is the fastest player on the team but I guess he just ran out of gas at the end. He was everything that I thought he would be when I saw him practice during his redshirt year.

COACH OF THE WEEK:

Co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Manny Diaz

Logan's take:
Whatever adjustment Diaz made from the first quarter on worked. Robinson torched State in the first quarter and looked like it was going to be a track meet. But Diaz adapted his scheme as the game went along as he has done all season and the Wolverines were not able to counter. He made some great calls during that game and had the offense off balance throughout those final three quarters.
