Samuels on the move

Fairhope (Ala.) High School junior Kyron Samuels attended his first junior day last month when he made the trip to Mississippi State. Of late, the 6 foot-2 and 285-pound center has remained on his visits' tour and has more planned in the future.

"I went to Southern Miss' junior day and then I also took an unofficial visit to South Alabama," said Samuels. "I went to Southern Miss with my teammate (Fairhope quarterback) Chase Domino and we had a good time. I got to talk to my recruiting coach, Coach Anderson, and also talked to Coach Fedora. It was a very good experience.

"I am also going to visit Alabama and Florida. I am not sure what order I will take those trips but I am going sometime this spring."

Samuels, the nephew of former Alabama and NFL standout Chris Samuels, currently holds offers from Southern Miss, Maryland, East Carolina, UAB and Western Kentucky. He has also been in constant contact with Mississippi State and said that relationship with the Bulldogs is steadily building in the right direction.

"I have really been staying in touch with Coach (Les) Koenning and also Coach (Dan) Mullen, too," said Samuels. "I get hand-written letters from them almost every day and I am really starting to like Mississippi State a lot. I am planning to go to Super Bulldawg Weekend and me and Chase Domino (MSU recruiting him in baseball) are going up there together.

"Coach Mullen told me he likes my frame and tells me to just keep competing and working hard. He said they were coming down to watch our spring practice. He keeps telling me what their program is about and I am really starting to buy into what they are building there at Mississippi State."

In the coming days, Samuels will put on the helmet and pads again and start up spring drills. Normally, Samuels' spring schedule is pretty full on the athletic front. But this spring it is the gridiron that has his full attention.

"I am just concentrating on football this spring," said Samuels. "But I will probably return to baseball for my senior year once all this recruiting stuff gets out of the way. I just want to have a good spring and get some big offers and focus on my senior year of football. I used to play baseball, basketball and track. But once I started getting football offers I put those sports aside. But I have to admit I do miss baseball and I've always had a passion for baseball."
