Pitt RS frosh QB Gonzalez suspended indefinitely
Anthony Gonzalez has been suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules, head coach Todd Graham announced Tuesday night.Pitt redshirt freshman quarterback
According to The Morning Call, Gonzalez was arrested early in the morning last Friday and charged with marijuana possession in his hometown of Bethlehem. Syracuse receiver Jarrod West was one of two other people arrested along with Gonzalez.
Graham was in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on Tuesday for the Big East's spring meetings. Gonzalez is one of three scholarship quarterbacks on Pitt's roster heading into the 2011 season, and none of the incoming recruits are projected to play the position.
After taking a redshirt as a true freshman in 2010, Gonzalez was one of the stars of spring camp. An athletic quarterback, the Bethlehem, Pa., native fit well into Graham's offense, and he was the offensive recipient of the Ed Conway Award, presented annually to the most improved players each spring.
With fellow redshirt freshman quarterback Mark Myers sidelined due to injury late in spring camp, Gonzalez spent the final few practices of spring as the backup quarterback behind redshirt junior Tino Sunseri. In the Blue-Gold Game at Heinz Field, Gonzalez completed 9-of-26 passes for 82 yards and two interceptions, but he was limited in his rushing ability by the policy of no-contact on the quarterbacks.
Gonzalez was ranked as Pennsylvania's No. 12 prospect in the class of 2010 after spending two years as arguably the best player in the state. He was named Class AAAA Player of the Year after his junior year in 2009 when he rushed for 1,697 yards and 24 touchdowns and passed for 1,580 yards and 12 touchdowns while leading Liberty to a state championship.
He added 25 total touchdowns (15 passing, 10 rushing) as a senior.
